I didn’t take it as a critique of Ente, not to worry! I’m not affiliated in any way, I just wanted to provide some context to people who may be concerned about the vendor locking aspect specifically.

Of course how you manage your media, your needs and your finances are all a very personal matter, I also self-host my photo backup, but I use ente in a complementary fashion, and I don’t backup everything to it. It just makes it convenient to collect, share and aggregate media between ente members and non-members.

In the case of ente, they have gone above and beyond to give full control to their users of their backing up process and backed up media:

• they provide a sync feature from ente to a local destination on your computer using the desktop app. It can run continuously to reflect all changes to your media and its organization in ente.
• they provide a CLI, so that you can program and implement your own export behavior it seems.

To me, it really shows they care about the users and do their best to avoid vendor lock-in.

And I personally feel much more confident in a company when their business model is a paid one. I’m a very happy customer, I have also convinced multiple people who seem happy too.

OP has a hotspot with mobile internet, but in that case why not just get a data only esim? No phone number, but you need to find one you can pay without credit card I guess? Or I don’t know if it matters at that point, but perhaps that’s a more suitable alternative? They are diet cheap, you can get 10GB for 10 USD for one month, depending on the country. Because there is no phone number there is no KYC.

Running on prem is certainly possible, but requires a dedicated sysadmin team for anything serious. It is very important to be able to have availability guarantees and some expert you can count on to solve your problem with a phone call.

Isn’t that something you solve with snooze? Like put the alarm for the earlier time, set the snooze time to 15min and hit snooze until you want to wake up?

I’m not convinced having a specific ruling targeting just tiktok would be a good move. I think I understand and side with all the reasons they are doing it: be it privacy, security and more. But they should not uniquely apply to tiktok, but to all apps. If suddenly there’s a Russian app, or a Nigerian app or a swiss app, any which for whatever reasons has security and privacy concerns, they should all be held to the same standards. Me no like double standards.

Am I the only that don’t see this the same way as the rest? I am in way way endorsing or supporting MAGA, but they did take action against big tech (though for reasons of retribution) and I see Proton only acknowledging a good person being designated to lead the next antitrust efforts, apparently with a good track record.

Proton also acknowledges Lina Kahn who has done a great job, nominated under Joe Biden.

Ultimately, I feel like from a perspective of Proton, any win against Big Tech, is a good win, and I can’t disagree.

There is a longer discussion to be had around how the dems were supported by oligarchs and I think that’s what Proton is referring to, they decided to turn a blind eye under the Obama administration for instance. So all in all, maga sucks, new pick probably good, and in my view, proton not actually endorsing maga/trump but just acknowledging a good pick.
