There are tons of software options to correct for distortion, just be sure to process the files before you use them if your lens has significant distortion. Also note that zooms exhibit different amounts and types of distortion at different focal lengths.

No super specialized knowledge here, but I have gone through my share of photography equipment reviews.

Things to look out for:

• Lens distortion. The most common are barrel and pincushion, but there are some others
• A flat focal plane

Neither of those is necessary a show stopper, but you need to be aware of how much your gear exhibits this behavior and work around it according (eg correcting for lens distortion before processing, not relying on the whole width/height of the sensor if necessary, etc).

Thanks! And yeah, compact cameras are nuts in price these days. The GM5 launched in 2014 at $900 with a kit lens. Today you can buy a body without a lens for $900-1,000 at MPB.

Honestly, my a9ii with the cheap/compact 50mm f/1.8 is pretty compact and I don’t mind carrying it. I just didn’t think to grab it for practice. For the older one, this was probably a good choice. For the younger one, I made a mistake. The kids where hallarious.

I ran into this at work today. Proposed a very simple approach for something to an architect and an engineering lead. Engineering lead said this was a practical solution that solves a problem that’s been plaguing them for two years. The architect nearly immediately said, “well, the real source is a mainframe that was stood up in the very early 80s. Let’s ignore the fact that changing it takes an act of Congress or that we have multiple modern downstream systems between it and us that are a much better home for this new function.”

It really seemed to amount to, “I didn’t come up with this, therefore I don’t support it.”

Gay marriage is presently legal in the US at a federal level due to a Supreme Court ruling, not a law. It seems inevitable that this will change given the present makeup of the court, similar to abortion.

I am all for LGBTQ rights, but until something is passed by Congress the current situation seems precarious.

I like the photo, but I am somewhat curious how you wound up with those exposure settings. Could you not have backed the shutter speed off a bit to get ISO down? Not that it’s particularly high, but it seems like you could have probably captured this at your camera’s native ISO.

Another Sony shooter here. I have a few Sigma primes and optically they’re pretty good. I imagine their zooms are too, but I don’t have any.

For youth sports, I use Tamron’s 150-500 on e-mount. It looks like it’s available on z-mount too. It focuses very quickly and accurately, is sharp end to end, and has really nice rendering. It’s also a bit smaller/lighter than the Sigma. Yeah, you loose 100mm, but 500 vs 600 isn’t that drastic.

So far I’ve been through two T-ball seasons, one baseball season, and one soccer season with it. I’ve never found myself wanting for more. On the biggest baseball field our kids have been to, the fences put me either 100 or 175 feet (30-50 meters) from home base at the end of the fence. With 6-7 year old kids I don’t need 500mm on the shorter side for a full body + bat shot.

Downsides:

• 150mm is pretty long, so my phone usually comes out of my pocket for post game stuff. I try to stick to a single lens bag
• On Sony, all third party lenses tend to not hold focus well when zooming. This is more annoyance than anything

Building capacity costs a ton of money and with the constant flip flopping on tarrifs there’s a lot of hesitancy to break ground.

Discovery will be interesting. I hope that the pilot was on the radio with someone asking for advice/providing updates and doing general CYA things before they physically confronted the passenger. I could easily see the pilot being agitated because they were put in that situation, but I also hope there were other interactions leading up to a rapid escalation.

I wonder if they were in the air or on the ground. Based on the fact that they were detained after they landed I’m guessing they were in the air. The whole thing sounds very non-ideal. Reading through the discovery material, if the case makes it that far, will be interesting.

This is the same way they measure the time duration you need to hold poultry at 165°F for.

Here’s a fun thought experiment: egg whites collegiate (ie are considered cooked) at 150° F. To reach 7.0 log10 levels of salmonella killing you would have to either have to hold your eggs at this temperature for 72 seconds or cook them to a higher temperature and hold them there less long. I don’t know about you, but I like over easy eggs. The center of the yolk gets no where near 150.

Yes you can, but you’re not going to be able to cook to order.

It’s all about the meat’s internal temperature and the amount of time it’s kept at that temperature. If the meat could reach 165° F instantly it would kill everything. If you hold it at 120° F for two hours you kill nearly everything.
