The Hobbit wasn’t originally set in middle earth. He started working on the Silmarillion in 1914 at 22, but didn’t start Lord of the Rings till much later. I don’t know if he began to set the Hobbit in middle earth before or after starting on Lord of the Rings.
Looks like revenue this quarter was $19.34B. That’s slightly less than the 2024 Q1 result of $21.3B. Looks like Q1 is usually lower, let’s make this trend continue to following quarters.

3·5 days agoThere’s no hope of zero warning. There’s hope that we can minimize the warming to that 6C or lower. And hope that we can help ecosystem adapt to new climates. There are corals that are adapting, we need to make sure they survive and spread. We might even need to engineer in heat tolerance. Warming is coming, if they only need to deal with it, they might be able to adapt. But when you stack an half a dozen other significant stressors, it becomes much less likely to survive. So reducing those stressors helps, even if global warming is going to be bad.
That sounds like an excuse to not try anything. We need to push for as much harm reduction as we can, not just give up because a lot of things will die.

Yeah, the defeatist view is really dangerous. But as the video addresses, by limiting other stressors, reefs can recover even at higher temperatures.

91·8 days agoYou’d need a world wide government to tax and distribute for that, right? So that government would need to have control of every over country, like the EU on a larger scale. That seems unlikely to happen without violence, but I guess it would work if every worker in the world was suddenly in support of it.

2·16 days agoYeah, the 10k per person would be about half a billion dollars one time. So it makes no sense to get less than that only one time.
https://hexos.com/ is also trying to be a low skill low effort version of truenas, but it does have a one time payment. I didn’t think you’d need a nas specific OS for just one storage laptop though, it’s more meant for large home storage servers.
