  • Ok then America should be a smaller collection of native states that the white settlers genocided.

I agree in principle. But you can’t reverse history to what it SHOULD have been.

Self determination is I assume your point. Which I’m all for. But that is only as good as how well those states can continue to defend their sovereignty. You break up Russia and then it’s just a bunch of small defenseless states that the rest of the world with pick apart for resources as they’ve done with Ukraine.

Not really the same. Charging for this would discourage people from using it. They have to make a choice on feeling safe vs. spending money.

This gives everyone the option and subsidizes it to the entire community.

This is exactly why socializing things like this is beneficial.

Every service has a cost. That cost is the value of the labor being provided. But we decide as a society that providing services like this benefits everyone living in society. Regardless of if they use it directly or not.

When people say “free” in this context that’s what they mean. They mean the decision based on personal finance is removed.

We don’t want people choosing personal finance over safety or health. Removing that dependency benefits everyone.

  • Again, this is by design. The point is GitHub is for developers. If a non developer reaches the page they SHOULD feel a little intimidated. They SHOULD be either forced to read some notes or come back and ask for help (like the commenter did).

This is for their own benefit. Its meant to give people pause about what they are installing or downloading. Since GitHub can host anything. It SHOULD feel different than downloading Discord or some other app.

It is not meant to be a friendly UI that says “Install here!”. It is meant to make the user have some caution over what they are doing.

And, again, it’s designed for developers. Not end users.

  • I’ll give the benefit of the doubt here. But if you’re at all “leftist” and attribute America to being run by “Israel” you should really understand who’s framing you are repeating here.

America is not “run by Israeli interest”. It is run by the interest of capital and for the interest of capital. American capitalist are absolutely the ones running, encouraging, and most of all enabling the actions of Israel. And they hide behind “creating a safe place for Jews” like we don’t all understand it’s just another madagascar plan.

Please don’t fall for this “Israel runs America”. Especially trying to attribute all Jewish Americans to supporting Israel.

Israel IS American interest. And that interest is for a white supremacists capitalist class. Using Antisemitism as a shield will only last for so long. These Nazi’s are going to drop that real quick and start “sending Jews to Israel where they can be safe” before we know it.

And if it wasn’t clear. The people that say America is “run by Israel” are Nazis. And the Nazi leaders running this country will quickly start singing that same song when they are done using antisemitism/Israel as reason to deport Muslims and anyone supporting Palestine.

Please don’t let fascist fool you. The Israeli fascist do not care about Jews and neither do the American fascist. They both only care about creating their own fascist ethnostates.

  • I hadn’t really thought about it until reading this comment but I am definitely the same. I use to pirate so much software back in the day. But, I really just find myself looking for projects on GitHub that fit my needs.

I pirated a video upscaling program just to test it out. Topaz I think it was. But it was mostly just curiosity because it was very niche in it’s performance improvement over it’s open source alternative video2x.

That’s literally the only software I can remember pirating in the last 10 years.

If it’s good and requires a one time purchase. I buy it. Unraid is obviously going to be an example of that for a lot of people here.

I think I’ve spent more money donating “coffee” to good open source projects though. And going windows free for over 3 years now has been a big part of that. I can’t stand when I have to use Windows now. Work still forces it on me. But I literally only use it to SSH into my redhat VM.

All my piracy is media these days. And that’s only because the streaming services have basically reached the point that cable did back in the late 2000s.

Piracy has always been based on convenience rather than cost for me. “Piracy is a service issue” is the famous quote. Additionally it’s about services not giving you ownership over the thing you purchased. Which is what a lot of software has become.

  • Trans people are just people. It’s like saying “there are still laws about black people” in the Jim Crow South.

Laws should be written to be inclusive, not exclusive. When laws are written in these fragmented ways it is the exact purpose of right wingers to exploit them. It is written to SERVE THE POWER OF OPPRESSION.

This is the same as “gay people can have civil partnerships”. While ignoring that it is literally just a method used to exclude gay partners of the same rights married partners have.

It’s the same “separate but equal” bull shit that has existed over and over. I don’t know how “well intentioned liberals” keep falling for this same trick over and over again throughout our history.

The rules on “sex” are entirely based on social definitions of gender norms. Or tell me you would be confused by seeing this guy walk through TSA with F as his sex.

Edit: I really should not have to use “passing” trans people to make my point. But I feel like people live in a different reality where every ID check is followed up with a genital inspection.

  • This is the precise reason why that clip everyone lost their mind over was using the wording “birthing person” when discussing rights related to abortion.

You can get your “anti-woke” panties in a bunch for terms like this. But there is a reason they are used when deciding laws. It is meant to very very specific and at the same time being very very inclusive to the rights the law is meant to protect.

It’s so no asshole tries to take away your rights on a technicality they made up in their mind.

No one is calling women, nb’s, or trans men “birthing persons” except in this specific context and for very good reason.
