Ideas like this haven’t come up for the first time. I expect this idea occurred to Valve and they thought it was not worth the investment of money/manpower/infrastructure.

Valve would either have to publish on Google Play. That would put it in the role of a developer and Valve is not really pushing on its developer role significantly. A huge cut off sales then goes to google.

Or Valve will have to try to make an alternative store… And that is no small feat. Most people will not sideload apps or install other store fronts. I imagine the proportion of android game sales that Valve can get into will be tiny enthusiast communities, and that won’t be anywhere near enough to pay the bills. On this alternative store, Valve will have to get developers to make games…or again they will have to consider developing games in house to get the ball rolling. Their best bet would likely be to use their existing IP to make mobile spin-offs (DotA card game? Or a wild-rift type MOBA? CS:GO turn based tacticle game? Or try to compete with CoD for the FPS market?).

I can’t see any combination of the above that seem like probable success for Valve. It’s admirable that they’re sticking to their niche and what they know. Pushing further into the handheld gaming and console market has been a much better option for them and they’re trying hard. Even in that aspect, the Steam Deck is universally praised…and is selling roughly 2.5% as many consoles as the Nintendo Switch. And no one I know IRL knows about the Steam Deck (other than my brothers, who bought one after I told them I had pre-ordered mine).

There are many countries where they scrutinise where you’re going to be staying and how you’re going to pay. You can’t apply for any visa without giving proof of accommodation bookings and showing bank statements.

I’ve been to America before Trump and there were plenty of questions at the border about where I was going and to see my confirmed hotel bookings, and I went with a “good” passport (UK) at the Canadian border.

I haven’t tried yet. I think there are videos on YouTube showing Moonlight working well. Don’t know about other apps. I’ve installed Steam Link expecting that WiFi 6 should give a good streaming experience.

Less demanding Switch games work fine. The Retroid Pocket 5 would have better performance and there are videos on youtube with game demonstrations to see performance.

Lemmy is fragmented and I don’t know if posts get visitbility across communities. It seems Lemmy.world gets more engagement and that should be the primary place to post. It’s a shame that cross posts don’t bring everyone to the same commenting area to engage with each other.

PSP had so many great games. I’ve got China Town Wars, Rock Band, Wipeout Pure, Patapon, Mercury Meltdown, Final Fantasy Tactics…and really wish I had the time to get to all of these.

AliExpress is really good and reliable now. I get plenty of stuff off there. Linus Tech Tips even recommends it as one of the best places to pick up a bargain on a desktop CPU. They give you a refund if items are undelivered. I look for items with plenty of pictures and detailed descriptions and picture reviews, and I’ve never been disappointed.

The other thing is that lots of deals end up being discussed on HotUKDeals.com and forum users will report back (e.g. cuing a Crucial NVME drive for £30 and posting speed tests and that it’s the real thing).

These plans for tariffs are going to affect Americans badly though. eBay is recommended in that case.

Pocketability is the biggest bonus for me. This doesn’t replace my Steam Deck, it supplements my gaming by making games available in situations where I can’t carry around a giant Deck.

The other issue is that my 4 yr old son has really gotten into gaming (Mario Odyssey) and takes the Deck off me a lot of the time 😄
