  • Also, even the reputation he has was bullshit propaganda. The common canon of the story is that Columbus knew the Earth was round and everyone else told him he was crazy, that the Earth was flat and he was going to sail his crew off the edge of the world. That’s not remotely true. Everyone knew he Earth was round. It was completely accepted and common knowledge at the time.

They did call Columbus crazy and say he was going to kill his crew, though. Not for believing the Earth was round, but for believing it was about a third the circumference that it actually is and was essentially known to be. The reason people didn’t sail west to get to the Indies was because it was believed to be (and is) a loooong fucking trip. He disagreed and thought it would be about a third of what everyone else knew it to be. So he only stocked the three ships with enough supplies for this much smaller distance.

He sailed his men west past the point of no return to what absolutely would have been their certain deaths. And they got close to killing him over it when their supplies ran critically low. Had he not lucked out and found land WAY fucking early and nowhere near his destination, he would have been remembered, if indeed he were remembered at all, for being a complete moron, because he was. He was just a moron that got saved by dumb luck.

And that’s the “heroic” stuff that we’re meant to applaud him for, independent of the horrible treatment of the natives. He only got a holiday in the first place because Catholics wanted a American figure that represented them and so they lobbied hard for it. The guy was not an aspirational figure though. He just had good PR for a long time.

  • Actually, it says he started when his cousin was 6, and ended when Kanye was 14. Either they have a big age difference or they don’t and this went on for a long time. Either way, i agree, this is not normal.

Edit: for clarity, young children “playing doctor” on occasion is entirely normal. Young children mimicing sex acts that they have seen can be more concerning, but can be innocent exploration for kids who don’t know any better and ultimately be fine. But young kids continuing to do these things periodically or increasing in experimentation over years is not healthy developmental behavior. And a significantly older kid, especially one who is old enough and understands what these acts are, performing sex acts on a younger child is extremely concerning. A) it often correlates with having their own sexual abuse history by an older person, B) it correlates with an unhealthy sexual development and inclination toward pedophilia, C) it can completely shred ones mental health as they struggle to cope with the trauma as they grow to understand that they were abused, and D) it propagates those things onto the younger person in turn.

  • Jesus fuck, if you want people to have kids, it is not that hard. Remove obstacles. On average, people want to have kids. It’s an evolutionary drive. People override that drive when they do not feel secure enough to start a family. Just make that easier. That’s it. Make sure people can afford to have kids, that they can provide them a comfortable and safe upbringing, that they can ready their kids to become adults, and that their kids’ future seems likely to be bright. How?

Decrease inflation. Subsidize child care. Increase wages and benefits (raise the mimimum wage). Mandate maternity/paternity leave. Make coverage for kids on health, dental, and vision insurance less expensive, or provide medicare for all (or at least all children). Make sure young people can afford good homes off of minimum wage. Make sure good schools are available to everyone by improving public education and providing bussing. Make sure kids are safe in schools with gun control laws. Make sure college/trade schools are inexpensive and accessible. Stablize the economy. Promote good middle class jobs. Avoid war. Fight bigotry. Provide comprehensive sex education and family planning resources including abortion rights so that people can start families when they are ready and promote generational wealth and welfare rather than propogating generational poverty.

Notice how damn near all of these things that would increase the birth rate are antithetical to GOP policy though? You want the results, but not the means. You want to offer “medals” for motherhood like a boss offers a pizza party for a record profits last quarter. It’s unserious, unhelpful, condescending, insulting, and still leaves new parents struggling to get by. Be better leaders with sensible policies. Maybe then you will get your wish.
