  • LOL, you need to check your history to see what cities were like before cars came into being. Listen, I’m just having fun for the most part. I think our car culture is fucking stupid and has done untold harm and I am well aware of how car culture came to where it’s at. I also think public transportation should be much more wildly available, and free. Part of the commons. Studies have shown that physical mobility has a bigger impact on social and economic growth that any other variable.

But getting rid of cars, or saying that the top speed for all cars should be 30kph is, sorry, stupid and fantasy thinking. It’s skipping too many steps. Cars suck. I get that. But so much of the fuckcars movement is focusing just on magically getting rid of cars, when it should be focusing on improving all the other options to the point that cars don’t make sense. What really needs to happen is for humans to stop breeding like fucking rats. Which again, is fantasy thinking.

  • It wasn’t too long ago that I did it. Maybe 8-10 years ago. I realized nothing I needed came in the mail, so I just stopped checking. At one point the postman literally just took all the junk mail and dumped it on my front step. I raised holy hell with the post office about littering, after jamming it all back into the outgoing mail. I think the way the postmaster did it, instead of dealing with my assholeness, was just setting my residence to unoccupied in or something along those lines. Spam, of all sorts (aside from Spam musubi) is just a fucking drag. Like all marketing and advertising.

  • Yeah, it got so bad I was worried I was going to rage on the delivery driver (for what it’s worth, I support the USPS and have not heard a legitimate argument about why it should be stopped. But fucking junk mail. I know it accounts for a chunk of their income, there has got to be a better way. Like making the price of every single piece of junk mail that is delivered to me is $10. Something. Cut out junk mail and only have delivery 4 days a week. Not consecutively.

But yeah, to get back to your question. I talked to the Postmaster at the local Post Office and they had me write and sign a piece of paper saying,“I DON’T WANT THIS SHIT NO MORE!”. The trouble it caused in my life was absolutely dwarfed by the positive of not having to deal with that shit anymore.

  • I would love to pin it on one thing, like social media. While I felt, feel, like that was a big variable in the downfall, I can’t underestimate the loss of the “American Dream”. I felt like phones should be banned. But some teachers felt like phones could be integrated into the curriculum. I could see both points, but honestly I just felt like society had passed me by. One of my master teachers, when I had been student teaching 25 years previously, said it was time to go when the students no longer entertained you. I felt like that was about right. I don’t think knowledge at your fingertips is a reason not to actually learn stuff.
